Historic Corolla Park

Although it’s the furthest of the four locations, at about 190 miles northwest of Wilson, Historic Corolla Park spans 39 acres with plenty of space to fly a kite. Check out the expansive lawn found at the Whalehead Club, where you can fly your kite against stunning views with the Currituck Sound and Currituck Beach Lighthouse. For this northern Outer Banks spot, parking is free, and it remains open from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park

Located about 150 miles east of Wilson, Jockey’s Ridge State Park is the tallest natural sand dune system found in the Eastern part of the country. This spot is one of the best areas on the Outer Banks to fly a kite, but make sure you stay away from the power lines, parking lot, and dunes near the highway. This park also offers a bonus: If you need additional kite supplies or want to take kite-flying lessons, a well-known kite store named Kitty Hawk Kites can be found directly across the street.

Enter the park at milepost 12 on the Highway 158 Bypass in Nags Head. Hours for the park vary depending on the month, but the latest it stays open is until 9 p.m. in May. The ridge part of the park closes 15 minutes before the park does.

Lake Crabtree County Park

Found in Morrisville, which is about an hour west of Wilson, Lake Crabtree County Park has 14 acres of open space found on the north side of a 520-acre lake. Winds that come from the south, southwest, and southeast give you plenty of lift to fly your kite. Keep in mind that large pine trees tend to block the wind coming from the north. The park remains open from 8 a.m. until sunset, and there is no fee to enter the area.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

Why not try your hand at flying in the same area the Wright brothers did? Found in the Outer Banks, Wright Brothers National Memorial is the spot where the two brothers from Ohio experimented with flight back in the early 1900s. The location sits along the water and isn’t elevated, but this allows you to experience decent crosswinds. The park remains open every day of the week from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Adults age 16 and older must pay $10 to enter the park, or you can purchase an annual pass for $35.
